The Medical Laboratory Technician performs various laboratory procedures, including hematologic, chemical, microscopic, and bacteriological testing of body fluids to support diagnosis and treatment under medical direction. Specific duties involve rapid turnaround of complete blood counts, manual differentials, phlebotomy for pediatric patients, processing bone marrow samples, and coordinating specialty testing.
Candidates must be licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the State of Tennessee Laboratory Licensing Board and possess either a high school diploma plus 12 months of approved clinical training or an associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. Experience in laboratory settings, especially with pediatric hematology studies and phlebotomy, is preferred.
A licensed Medical Laboratory Technician performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures, using both manual and automated methods.
Required: High school or equivalent plus 12 months approved clinical training or an associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. In lieu of Associate�s degree has successfully completed equivalent military training and served as a medical laboratory specialist.

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs hematologic, chemical, microscopic and bacteriological testing of body fluids to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of a Medical Director. He/she works closely with the Medical Director and team members in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement. He/she performs other duties as assigned by a Medical Director and/or Laboratory Director.
The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit�s policies.
