The Phlebotomist I is responsible for obtaining blood and other specimens from patients for laboratory testing by verifying identification, preparing sites, and performing venipuncture or skin punctures using aseptic techniques. This role also involves labeling and transporting specimens, performing associated clerical/computer duties, and maintaining professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
Required qualifications include a High School diploma or GED, along with excellent interpersonal, communication, and solid computer skills, including Microsoft proficiency. Preferred qualifications include CPR certification, Phlebotomy Technician Certification, and prior experience in a team-oriented or customer service role, or completion of a formal phlebotomy program.
The Phlebotomist I obtains blood and other specimens according to established policies and procedures from any location where patients may be present for laboratory testing. In doing so, obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin sites, and performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transports same to laboratory for analysis. This position works independently and as a part of a team, performs clerical and/or computer duties associated with the laboratory, and provides timely specimen collection and routing of laboratory specimens. Maintains professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians. Duties may vary by assigned area and/or shift.
License/Certifications: CPR Certification through the American Heart Association Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PBT) Experience: 6 months in a team orientated environment or customer service role Completion of formal structured phlebotomy program OR 3 months’ full-time phlebotomy experience or equivalent.
