The Substance Use Counselor 2 provides direct clinical services, including individual, group, and family therapy, and conducts substance use evaluations for individuals aged 15 and older with severe and persistent mental illness as part of an interdisciplinary team. This role involves evaluating drug and alcohol usage, determining the level of care, and documenting all interventions in compliance with policy.
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in a human services-related discipline and be certified as a NYS Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). A minimum of one year of related experience in a substance use disorder treatment setting is required, along with holding CASAC-T upon hire and achieving full CASAC certification within one year.
The Substance Use Counselor 2assigned to the Strong Ties Clinic Team is responsible for providing psychosocial assessment and treatment to individuals ages 15 and older who are severely and persistently mentally ill. Services are provided through participation on an interdisciplinary team designed to provide comprehensive, community based psychiatric care. The Substance Use Counselor 2 functions as a primary substance use disorders therapist providing direct clinical services including individual and group therapy, substance use evaluations, and treatment. SCHEDULE M-Th 7:30am-6pm, F: 7:30am-5pm ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team involving intake, evaluation, and treatment. Evaluates drug and alcohol usage and determines level of care as needed for all patients with co-occurring substance use needs. Provides feedback to the treatment team regarding client’s progress in recovery and facilitates and supervises the placement of clients in other community programs as necessary to meet recovery goals and/or needs. Provides individual, group, family and behavior therapy that is problem-specific and goal oriented; uses a therapeutic approach which is consistent with evidence-based practices for a particular problem; emphasizes social/interpersonal competence; addresses self-defeating beliefs, expectations, and behaviors that disrupt the recovery process; and considers a recipient’s strengths, needs, and cultural values. Provides evidence-based therapy interventions to address both psychiatric and substance use disorders. Documents interventions, both direct and indirect, in the patient’s medical record, in compliance with Division, Department, and Hospital policy. Ensures that Hospital, Department, and Clinic policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice, patient care, and disposition training. Subscribes to the Department’s goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating patients/families, trainees, research subjects and co-workers in a sensitive and caring manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences. Participates in available cultural competence events and trainings. Other duties as assigned MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Masters Degree in a discipline related to human services.
