For example: “DO” (action verb) + “WHAT” (object) – “Collects vitals from patients at the beginning of the visit according to clinic protocol”. % OF TIME PERFORMING DUTY A Demonstrates clinical competency in obstetrics including antepartum testing, obstetrical triage, labor, delivery and post vaginal delivery recovery care B Seeks professional growth through continuing education, and/or advanced professional certifications (fetal monitoring, RNC, STABLE, ACLS, etc.) C Demonstrates knowledge and ability to clean, maintain and dispose of all equipment and supplies in OB. D Admits patients to the obstetric department according to department/hospital policy. E Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and observing standard precautions when starting IV’s, giving injections, or as circumstances warrant. F Prepares for vaginal delivery including setting up sterile table, preparing radiant warmer and assembling chart. G Performs competently during emergency, busy or otherwise stressful situations in the obstetric department, remaining calm and resourceful. H Administers and controls narcotics and medications. Dispenses medication appropriately according to policy and supports the hospital medication administration competency programs. I Documents patient care and procedures/interventions accurately and thoroughly in accordance with hospital standards. J Competently performs nursing duties in the newborn nursery including newborn assessment, recognition of deviations from the normal newborn and providing newborn care K Competently performs nursing duties in the postpartum area, including participating in breastfeeding education, discharge instructions, patient assessment and assisting patients with ADL’s. L Advises the nurse manager of nursing activities, needs, problems and unusual events M Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application. N Actively participates in the review of policies and procedures for the obstetric department on an annual basis. O Participates in stocking, sorting, or inventory of departmental supplies to ensure appropriate items are readily available for patient care needs P Supports the department by attending, and constructively contributing to staff or other meetings as able/necessary. Q Maintains a clean, organized, and safe working environment in both patient care areas and the nursing station R Demonstrates appropriate judgment in notifying/communicating with physicians. S Demonstrates technical competency through annual equipment certification, attending manufacturers’ sponsored in-services, and additional training as required. T Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards as applied to area of responsibility. U Maintains harmonious relationship and open line of communication within the unit and with other departments, staff, physicians, and other support personnel providing support and assistance to ensure quality patient care. V Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and other staff members.
