The Registered Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect care of neurosurgery patients, including assisting providers with computer entry, scheduling, and data collection, while adhering to all standard nursing principles. Key duties involve scheduling/screening for procedures, performing clinical assessments, preparing patients for procedures like Epidural Steroid Injections, and managing post-procedure care and education.
Candidates must be a graduate from an accredited School of Nursing and possess current licensure to practice nursing in Tennessee, along with maintaining BLS certification. A minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience is required, with preference given to those with prior neurosurgery, physician office, EMR, or Critical Care/PACU experience.
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and/or Physician (s) a registered professional nurse employed with the Neurosurgery Hospital Services is responsible for direct and indirect care of patients, assisting physicians/providers as needed with computer entry, scheduling, data collection. All standard nursing practices and principles are used for the care of the neurosurgery patient, including pharmacology, patient assessment and procedures documentation.
*Care will include, but not be limited to scheduling/screening for procedure appointments, clinical assessment of the patient, preparation for Epidural Steroid Injections; post-procedure assessment and management, and patient education.
*EPIC ECHART Trainer for the departments
*Joint Commission representative for the departments
Required: Graduate from accredited School of Nursing. Annual Erlanger Health System E-Online learning Modules.

Required: Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills; knowledge of organizational functions, policies, and regulations; knowledge of current trends and new developments; knowledge of principles and practices of nursing, applicable to those areas requiring special education. Must have 2 years of clinical nursing experience.

The Nurse Licensure Compact will not change how to obtain or renew a Tennessee license. However, the Tennessee nursing license will be a single state license for Tennessee Residents or non-compact state residents. Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.

The RN, Procedure Nurse with the Neurosurgery Hospital Services must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive direct and/or indirect care of patients with neurosurgical disease processes. The registered nurse must be able to assess and care for patients during the pre- and post-operative periods- checking heart rhythm, vital signs, pain scale and oxygen saturation per standards. The RN, Procedure Nurse. The RN, Procedure Nurse must be able to assist with procedures under the direction of EHS physicians- monitoring moderate sedation, giving sedation and pain IV medications, positioning patient for procedures, assessing patient post procedure for mobility, sensation, vital signs, pain scale and oxygen saturation. RN, Procedure Nurse will document according the Erlanger's standards within the pre- and post- procedure flow sheets, using approved abbreviations. RN, Procedure Nurse will maintain medication and narcotic counts each procedure day. The RN, Procedure Nurse will maintain emergency code drug box and equipment. The RN, Procedure Nurse tests, screening patients for procedures, pulling testing and lab results, and assist with charge capture and coding. The RN, Procedure Nurse under the direction of the provider, will review and educate patient on findings. The RN, Procedure Nurse will review medication lists with patients as per medication reconciliation protocol. The RN, Procedure Nurse will serve as ECHART super user for the office. The RN, Procedure Nurse will assist with education on Joint Commission requirements and maintaining standards throughout the office setting, assisting with in house surveys for Joint Commission readiness .The RN, Procedure Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by Neurosurgery Hospital Services. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. The employee must interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures manual.
