The Physician Assistant will serve as first and second assistant in cardiothoracic surgery cases, performing endoscopic vein harvesting and placing various lines and catheters. Responsibilities also include participating in direct patient care and completing required clinical documentation within the VA’s electronic health record.
Candidates must possess an active, unrestricted Physician Assistant license and NCCPA certification, along with documented experience of over 100 endoscopic procedures for both radial and saphenous vein harvesting. Successful completion of VA credentialing, privileging, and background checks, along with current BLS/ACLS certifications, are mandatory.
Serve as first and second assistant in cardiothoracic surgery cases in the operating room Perform endoscopic radial and saphenous vein harvesting (extensive experience required) Provide ultrasound‑guided arterial and venous access for central line placement Insert and remove: Chest tubes and pigtail catheters Swan‑Ganz catheters Pacing wires Perform cardioversion Act as bedside assistant for robotic cardiothoracic procedures Participate in direct patient care (approximately 99.8% of role) Complete required clinical documentation in the VA’s electronic health record (EHR) Follow VA medical staff bylaws, quality assurance, patient safety, and infection control standards Participate in quality improvement, OPPE, and performance monitoring activities as required
Active, full, unrestricted Physician Assistant license issued by any U.S. state, territory, or DC Board certification (NCCPA / PANCE) required Must maintain all licenses, certifications, and credentials throughout the contract Documented experience of 100+ endoscopic procedures for both: Radial vein harvesting Saphenous vein harvesting Demonstrated proficiency in: Robotic cardiothoracic surgery (bedside assistant) Advanced cardiothoracic OR procedures Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging Subject to review and approval by the Medical Executive Committee and Governing Body Must meet VA background investigation and PIV badge requirements Must comply with all VA training mandates, including: BLS ACLS Must hold or obtain an NPI number All candidates must be able to: Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist Lift up to 20 lbs Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance Push/pull with 30 lbs of force All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
