The Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical, peer-based support to individuals impacted by substance use and/or mental health challenges. This role involves engaging individuals, facilitating groups, and connecting them to community resources to promote self-directed recovery.
Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED with 2 years of experience in human services, including 1 year of mental health direct care service, or a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Certificate with additional experience. Lived experience in recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges is also required.
Description We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Peer Recovery Coach to join our growing team. In this role, you will use your lived experience to provide peer-based support, encouragement, and advocacy to individuals at various stages of recovery. The Peer Recovery Coach works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to promote engagement, hope, and self-directed recovery, while maintaining timely and accurate documentation. The ideal candidate is reliable, empathetic, and person-centered, with strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, recovery-oriented environment.

Job Summary The Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical, peer-based support to individuals impacted by substance use and/or mental health challenges by drawing on lived experience to build trust, inspire hope, and promote self-directed recovery. Through authentic connection and a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach, the Peer Recovery Coach supports participants in identifying personal goals, overcoming barriers, and developing practical skills to sustain wellness, while helping them navigate systems of care, access community resources, and strengthen natural supports. This role emphasizes empowerment, mutual respect, and collaboration with care teams, while modeling recovery-oriented behaviors and reinforcing the belief that recovery is possible for everyone.
Key Responsibilities Engage individuals who may be at-risk and provide stage-appropriate recovery education and supports, e.g., motivational interviewing Assist in the orientation process, facilitate groups and co-facilitate meetings for persons who are new to receiving mental health and/or co-occurring disorders services Educate and engage individuals in the Wellness Recovery Action Plan process Assist in development and implementation of educational and support groups, activities deemed beneficial by the program community, e.g., warm line, calendar of events, etc. Introduce and link individuals to community resources and peer supports outside of the facility to promote community integration, Support the individual in seeking to connect/reconnect with family, friends, significant others and in learning how to improve or eliminate unhealthy relationships Provide education and advocacy within the community that promotes awareness of mental health and co-occurring disorders while reducing barriers such as stigma and misconceptions Provide training and assist in orientation of new employees to help staff understand and accept the concept of recovery and be supportive of a peer culture that promotes recovery Participate in all meetings, task forces, advisory boards designated by regulatory bodies and/or COMHAR Employees are eligible for generous benefit options including but not limited to: Full-time and Part-time employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, and dental insurance, life and disability coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, an employee assistance program, and additional voluntary options such as disability, accident, and pet insurance.
Peer Recovery Coach Job Requirements: High School Diploma or GED with 2-year experience in human services which 1 year of mental health direct care service. OR Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Certificate and 1 additional year paid or volunteer work experience in mental health direct service. Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Certificate is required. Lived experience in recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges Experience working in mental health, substance use, or community-based programs Knowledge of recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care Prior experience in peer support, recovery services, or behavioral health Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, with strong reading and writing skills, is preferred not required About COMHAR:
