The Student Extern assists the patient care team by performing clinical tasks under the supervision of a Cath Lab RN or Tech. They initially function as a Patient Care Tech before transitioning to higher-level clinical duties based on their certification program progress.
Candidates must be enrolled in their final year of a recognized Cath Lab Tech certification program and maintain good academic standing. A current Basic Life Support certification is required, and prior hospital experience is preferred.

The Student Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team. The extern performs at the level that has successfully been completed and passed in the clinical section at a local college. Under the general supervision of a Cath Lab RN or Cath Lab Tech, the extern assists with direct patient care in accordance with the established protocols, the skills they are able to perform are expanded. All newly hired externs will first function in the capacity of a Patient Care Tech, regardless of their certification program level. When the student has been cleared by the manager or director they may be moved to their appropriate skill level.
