Summary
The operating room technician stocks the operating room suite, scrub basin preparatory area and equipment needed to perform operating room cases. The ORT performs tasks of cleaning, terminally disinfecting/sterilizing scopes, instruments and equipment in the operating room maintaining necessary documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies. This position works with the operating room team to help transport what is needed to the operating room suite to provide the team with stock, equipment, essentials to perform the procedure.
Responsibilities

- Provides for sanitation of OR rooms after each case and maintains cleanliness of work areas and scrub sinks. (30%)
- Stocks work areas and OR rooms with sanitation supplies, linens, solutions, and specimen containers. (25%)
- Provides transport services for items and occasional patients between the OR and other departments. (15%)
- Has a knowledge base of flexible scope reprocessing, handling trays of sterile instruments and sterile packages through training and competency. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Relays materials through the case cart system and tube system to the OR rooms, in a timely manner. In the performance of the regular job duties, it is appropriate for this job code to have access to the supply room for the purpose of stocking. Process instruments and equipment not sent to the Sterile Processing Department. Carries phone to communicate and answers appropriately. Ability to handle multiple tasks, gets along well with others, and work independently in a positive manner.Remains alert in recognizing signs of distress in patients during transfer. Receives assignments by communicating with the OR front desk and communicates with the circulatingnurse of the rooms assigned. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Equired experience, training and skills
- Six months experience as an operating room technician with 60 scope cleanings required as provided on self documentation of scope cleanings. Completion of Advanced GI Technical Specialist (AGST) through (Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates) SGNA required at the time of hire or transfer to position. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and abbreviations necessary to understand information and instructions. Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Knowledge of basic nursing care principles, standards, isolation, and sterile techniques preferred. Medical Terminology; college courses preferred. Patient Care Tech experience preferred. - CONDITIONS: Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
