Conduct chemical and microscopic analysis of body fluids and biological samples to determine components and compatibility. Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure quality assurance, and document test results accurately.
Requires successful completion of a 4-year medical technologist program. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of laboratory experience.
Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, or spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal or abnormal components. Analyze laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results. Enter data from analysis of medical tests or clinical results into computer for storage. Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers. Establish or monitor quality assurance programs or activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results. Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment. Provide technical information about test results to physicians, family members, or researchers. Collect and study blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, or compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. Analyze samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction. Other duties as assigned.
Education: Successful completion of 4 year medical technologist program.
Minimum two years of laboratory experience.
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.
Knowledge: Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests. Knowledge of use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments. Knowledge of safety, infection control, and quality assurance policies and regulations.
Skill in applying appropriate testing procedures. Skill in proper use, preventive maintenance, and repair. Skill in appropriate quality control and confidentiality procedures.
Ability to exercise independent judgment, problem solve, make decisions, and use discretion in reporting/distributing results. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, and staff. Ability to organize workload effectively and work quickly with high level of accuracy using manual/finger dexterity and eye–hand coordination.
Standard laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Laboratory unit, well lighted and temperature controlled. Exposure to chemicals, communicable diseases, biohazards, and other conditions related to medical setting.
Varied activities including standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, and stooping. May occasionally need to lift/carry 50 pounds. Some stress related to ensuring accuracy of work.
