The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team by preparing operating rooms, managing instruments, and maintaining strict aseptic techniques. They also support patient care by assisting with lifting and positioning during surgical procedures.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and complete an accredited surgical technologist program or hold a current CST/NCCT-TC certification. Additionally, applicants must possess current BLS certification and demonstrate knowledge of surgical equipment and aseptic procedures.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of various surgical procedures in order to assist and anticipate physician needs.Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment.Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. High School Diploma or GED is requiredCompletion of at least one of the following options is required: Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, orGraduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program, or Current certification as a CST, orCurrent NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program Successful completion of the Community College of Rhode Island's certificate surgical technologist program Current BLS Certification is required upon hire WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment, burns from autoclaves, anesthesia gases, as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients.Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIES: None.
