The Medical Technologist performs high-complexity cytogenetics and genomics testing to identify chromosome abnormalities for diagnosis and treatment. Responsibilities include performing cell culture, analyzing FISH data, and maintaining rigorous documentation for quality assurance.
A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or a related scientific discipline is required along with at least three years of clinical experience. Candidates must hold ASCP BOC certification or an equivalent categorical certification.
Summary The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing laboratory testing assigned to the department. Recognize unusual test results and resolve discrepancies. Ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously including troubleshooting instruments and other problems/issues. Maintain knowledge of all current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) required to work effectively. Develop, draft, revise SOPs, training documents, validation/verification plans, test cases, and validation/verification summaries. Maintain excellent communication with the Department and other Laboratory Services personnel. The Medical technologist analyzes chromosomes and/or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) data from bone marrow, blood, amniotic fluid and tissues. This high complexity testing identifies chromosome abnormalities that assist in diagnosis, prognosis and/or guide treatment of genetic disease in constitutional disorders as well as somatic genetic alterations in cancer, primarily hematologic disease. Independently perform chromosome analysis for genetic disease (hematologic and constitutional) Perform cell culture work – set-up, harvest, slide preparation, slide banding, FISH setup and reagent preparation for a variety of specimen types Assure integrity of specimens throughout all phases of workflow Perform work with the highest standard for accuracy and precision. Understand the basis of each test. Use knowledge to make critical judgements regarding acceptability of test results. Troubleshoot instrumentation and culture/harvest issues Maintain and adhere to accurate documentation for QC/QA logs Enter results and data into EPIC and perform appropriate checks to minimize clerical errors. Recognize, confirm, report and document critical, abnormal, or unusual results. Maintain competency in all tests performed in the cytogenetics laboratory and perform these tests, as assigned.
