Requires an accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science and current ASCP or equivalent certification. Candidates must have one year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee or equivalent externship experience.
Who we’re looking for: The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 with the UWMC Northwest Laboratory. Work schedule: Per diem Night shift What you’ll contribute: Testing: Includes, but is not limited to: Perform routine and complex technical procedures on biological specimens. Perform tests accurately, promptly, and efficiently. Follows lab policies and procedures. Maintains cost-effective levels of supplies and reagents. Use computer systems (LIS, network, etc) effectively. Enter results of the analyses into the computer for storage and reporting. Operate, calibrate, clean, and maintain equipment used in testing. Follow safety procedures. Recognize and, if so assigned, correct errors. Document corrective action. Work independently and use independent judgment, under general direction by the supervisor. Demonstrate knowledge of expected values, disease states, physiological conditions, interfering substances, specimen quality problems, and interdependency of tests. Use this knowledge to interpret and confirm results, and to identify and resolve problems. As assigned, may check and approve the work of other technologists, technicians or lab assistants. Quality Control: Includes, but is not limited to: Utilize quality control criteria to ensure validity before reports are issued. Perform all quality procedures as required, such as proficiency testing, temperature control, reagent control, equipment calibrations and function verification tests. Date and initial controls, calibrators, reagents and test kits when opened, put in use, or reconstituted. Complete appropriate QC documentation and records necessary for CAP and Joint Commission accreditation and CLIA licensure. May assist laboratory management in preparation for inspections. As assigned, may assist with establishing and monitoring quality control programs. Identify questionable data and notifies supervisor immediately. Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting: Includes, but is not limited to: Proficiently remedies basic, intermediate, and complex instrument and procedural problems. Assist other MLSs, technicians and lab assistants with problem-solving. Identify causes of problems (technical and procedural as well as physiological), evaluate alternatives and determine solutions; if so assigned, implement identified solutions. Recognize uncorrectable problems and contacts equipment vendor and supervisor in a timely manner. Research and Development: Includes, but is not limited to: Develop new procedures; evaluate and modify existing procedures. Collect and analyze data; perform statistical analysis. Training and Leadership: Includes, but is not limited to: Train new employees (demonstrate bench techniques for routine and complex procedures). Assist with training students who are completing their formal clinical internships. This includes delivering theoretical information as well as bench techniques. May assist with developing and evaluating the teaching/learning program. If so assigned, direct the work of lab assistants and technicians, act as a resource, and provide input to the supervisor on staff performance. What you’ll need: Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience AND Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certifying organization OR certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND One (1) year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one (1) year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count toward the experience requirement.
