Perform venous and capillary blood collection across diverse patient demographics while ensuring proper identification and labeling. Responsibilities include managing specimens in the LIS system, maintaining supplies, and assisting in emergency codes or traumas.
Requires a high school diploma and BLS certification for inpatient/ER areas. Preference is given to candidates with one year of phlebotomy experience and a nationally recognized certification such as NHA or ASCP.

Key Responsibilities [List of material responsibilities and essentials duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position]
· Properly obtain venous and capillary blood samples assuring proper patient identification and labeling of those samples ranging in age from neonates to geriatric.
· Use the hospital LIS system to collect and receive samples, cancel specimens for necessary reasons, reprint labels, etc.
· Participate in proper inventory control by stocking phlebotomy areas including carts, draw stations, and phlebotomy supply room while checking inventory for acceptability and expiration dates.
· Treat patients with the utmost courtesy and respect.
· Be present and ready to work for all scheduled shifts. Be versatile and willing to help cover other shifts in times of higher workloads, call offs, vacations, and short staffing.
· Properly care for the electronic tools the organization provides for you; charge Vocera batteries, disinfect PDAs, fill mobile printers with labels, etc.
· Complete initial and annual trainings, yearly competencies, CAP assignments, and any paper form proficiencies assigned by management.
· Perform any and all other pertinent duties requested by lab supervisors, the Laboratory director, and members of upper management.
· Be able to focus on proper collection techniques while working in diverse environments such as outpatient, inpatient, surgical, emergency room, and traumas.
· Perform I.V. line starts for blood draw and cap for future I.V. use
· Respond to codes, traumas, and rapid responses to obtain blood samples, administer chest compressions, and assist in CPR if needed.
· Phlebotomist should keep in mind that the ER is their primary area but in down times they will need to float to inpatient areas and help collect inpatient orders.
· Perform full registration including updating demographics, checking insurance, and obtaining signature and initials for all paperwork.
· Minimize denials and ensure accurate data entry.

High School graduate or equivalent.
BLS through American Heart Association or American Red Cross if working in inpatient/Emergency Department areas.
· Must be able to handle stressful situations inherent to collection and dispatch of urgent medical laboratory testing results.
· Must possess good organizational skills and have the ability to deal effectively with the hospital staff.

· 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
· Previous laboratory experience.
NHA, ASCP or other nationally recognized certification in Phlebotomy.

· Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors.
· Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to manipulate blood drawing devices and collect specimens from numerous positions. (i.e. drawing a patient in a wheelchair, drawing a patient lying flat in a hospital bed, or drawing a patient around bulky equipment in an emergency room).
· Frequent walking of about 3-4 miles per day is to be expected.
· Occasional lifting of 40 -50 pounds or less.
· Occasional bending, stooping, or reaching.
· Frequent standing and or sitting.
