Occupational Therapist

The Occupational Therapist assists patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in living and working environments.

Essential functions/Major duties and responsibilities

• A. Occupational Therapist Duties/Services 95%
• Instructs the patient and patient’s caretaker(s) regarding the patient’s impairment and measures they can take to lessen or eliminate physical and/or mental impairment.
• Test and evaluate patients' physical and mental abilities and analyze medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goals for patients.
• Develops and implements individual therapy, rehabilitation, and adaptation plans for patients. Modifies as necessary.
• Provides functional training for the patient in negotiating common practical situations.
• Develops and implements a home exercise program for the patient.
• Recommend changes in patients' work or living environments, consistent with their needs and capabilities.
• Help clients improve decision making, abstract reasoning, memory, sequencing, coordination, and perceptual skills, using computer programs.
• Trains patients and/or caretaker(s) in compensatory techniques such as energy conservation, joint protection, and one-handed techniques for completing tasks.
• Evaluates the need for, prescribes, directs the use of, and adjusts adaptive or supportive equipment as necessary.
• Recommend changes in patients' work or living environments, consistent with their needs and capabilities.
• Makes practical recommendations to patients and/or caretaker(s) regarding care and treatment of the patient upon discharge and refers them to community resources as necessary.
• Ensures, inasmuch as it is possible, the safety and physical security of the patient.
• Coordinates patient care with physicians, therapists, home health aides, and other care providers.
• Attends case conferences as scheduled whether in-person, telephonically or electronically.
• Documents and conveys clearly and accurately to others the patient’s mental, physical, and emotional condition and response to treatment; completes all required paperwork.

Education and experience

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from accredited occupational therapy program.
• 3 years experience with rehabilitation and/or disabilities
• Any combination of experience and training which provide the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with an underserved population

Required certificates, licenses, registrations

• Licensed as an occupational therapist in the State of Montana in good standing.
