Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Sound understanding of the clinical laboratory dynamics and work flow
• Sound understanding of Laboratory practice
• Cognitive skills as related to a clinical laboratory
• Critical thinking and problem solving abilities
• Good Communication skills with ability to communicate appropriately with all age groups
• Versatile knowledge of basic computer skills with a preferred skill set of Information Technology, iCloud capabilities and Microsoft Office
• Ability to perform under stress and cope with difficult situations
• Good time management and organizational skills to complete patient testing, lab maintenance and quality control in a timely manner
• Continued practice of good stewardship as a representative member of the laboratory department as well as the hospital unit as a whole
• Must be able to work as a functioning member of the various team situations that a healthcare setting demands

• Current license with the State of Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory Personnel with a special endorsement as a Medical Laboratory Technologist – General
• Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist is preferred but not required
• BLS must be obtained within the first 30 days of hire

Working Conditions

• Patients need round-the-clock care; therefore working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Clinical / Technical laboratory staff spends a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching and standing; therefore, they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury.
• Clinical / Technical laboratory staff must be able to work accurately around frequent interruptions.
• Lab staff frequently faces hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases and must be prepared for such instances and take proper precautions at all times.
• In addition, lab staff may have to collect blood samples from patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative.

Physical Requirements / Demands

• Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients in phlebotomy situations may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
• Ability to bend, lean, and stoop without hindrance; requires a full range of body motion
• Fine motor skills
• Visual acuity; normal range of hearing
