The veterinarian provides comprehensive medical care and surgical treatment, performing high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and other soft tissue procedures on shelter and owned animals. This role also involves providing medical oversight for cruelty investigations and working in community clinics and mobile units.
Candidates must have graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and possess a valid California Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) license in good standing, along with a good driving record. Essential abilities include demonstrating compassion, strong decision-making, interpersonal, management, and problem-solving skills.
Performs high-quality high-volume spay neuter surgeries on shelter and owned companion animals of all sizes, as well as other soft tissue surgeries, such as enucleations, mass removals, laceration repairs, amputations, etc. as needed. Observes animals in shelter for signs of illness or injury. Provides medical oversight and support for animal cruelty investigations, including any necessary reports related to the condition and treatment of animals in protective custody. Works in our community clinic on a rotating basis, examining owned animals and recommending appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans and effectively communicates these options and plans with the animal owner. Ensures compliance with veterinary medical standards, practices, and procedures. Works on our mobile spay/neuter unit on a rotating basis that goes out to our service cities, performing high-quality, high-volume spay neuter surgeries. Occasionally works at our second location, San Gabriel Valley Humane Society as needed. Communicates and educates the RVTs, veterinary assistants, animal control officers and animal care technicians with relevant medical knowledge. Assists with training of veterinary students. Provides support to management and personnel to ensure an effective work environment. Participates in off-site community outreach program that looks to connect and help the underserved population with access to veterinary care. Must possess valid State of California Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent license, in good standing. No felony convictions or convictions of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Valid California Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, and a good driving record. Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Knowledge And Abilities: Compassion. Demonstrate compassion when working with animals and their owners. Treat animals with kindness and respect and must be sensitive when dealing with the owners of sick pets. Decision-making skills. Ability to explain and offer best treatment options for injuries and illnesses of animals, while also being able to modify treatment plans that align with the owner’s financial ability. Interpersonal skills. Strong communication skills, to be able to discuss recommendations and explain treatment options to animal owners and give instructions to staff. Management skills. Ability to direct team of technicians. Providing direction, delegating work, and overseeing daily operations. Problem-solving skills. Requires strong problem-solving skills. Physical Demands/Work Environment: Ability to lift 40 pounds. Extensive direct handling, carrying and restraining of animals, both large and small, and carrying of supplies and equipment. The company pays for and provides the following benefits: 40-hour work schedule. 60 hours administrative leave, 80 hours vacation annually. 10 paid holidays plus employee birthday. Compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, and experience. In addition to those factors, IVHS complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous benefits package.
