The Cytotechnologist independently performs laboratory testing and evaluates GYN and non-GYN specimens for malignant, pre-malignant, and infectious diseases. They also act as a resource for troubleshooting, quality assurance, and communicating critical results to pathologists.
Candidates must hold a B.S./B.A. in a related laboratory field and possess or be eligible for ASCP Cytologist certification. The role requires the ability to work under stress, exercise independent judgment, and achieve GYN Cytology Proficiency Testing within one year.
Follows established guidelines to process specimens and prioritize work. Assesses integrity of all specimens for testing. Recognizes and marks infectious, atypical and abnormal changes in GYN and non-GYN specimens. Recognizes age-specific reference ranges. Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them Acts as a resource for problem solving, action steps and troubleshooting for lab procedures and unexpected events in lab operations. Evaluates cytological processing, screening, and results of both GYN and non-GYN specimens for quality and accuracy and initiates appropriate intervention as need. Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver/pathologist. Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs. Recognizes and communicates values and trends that exceed the QC decision levels. Takes action to resolve and consults with supervisor as needed. (i.e. logs, daily worksheets, individual workload records, computer reports). Participates in the lab performance improvement program by collecting data, reviewing the results and implementing action step recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications: 3 years experience in area of specialty SurePath certification
