The APP is responsible for the assessment, admission, stabilization, and ongoing management of ICU patients under the direction of the Intensivist. They collaborate with physicians, perform diagnostic procedures, and ensure effective communication with the healthcare team.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree and complete a 2-year PA or NP program, along with relevant licenses and certifications. Experience in an ICU setting is preferred, and strong analytical and communication skills are essential.
Essential Responsibilities: In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination. Ensures that all requisite testing is completed. Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Reviews patient care management issues with the Intensivist. Consults with appropriate resources as needed. Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to: Insertion or removal of central venous lines, insertion of nasogastric tubes or other enteral feeding tubes, insertion of arterial lines, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy and IV insertion, and electrocardiograms. Enters orders for the initial ICU admission and subsequent ICU care. Is responsible for making daily rounds on patients alone and/or with intensivist or surgical team; report findings to attending physician. Places orders in the EMR. Is responsible for preparing patients for discharge and completing documentation for same. Participates in discharge conferences as appropriate/necessary. Completes patient care referrals and coordination of care as necessary. Participates in the quality improvement/quality assurance program. May be responsible for communicating patient hospital summary directly to referring physician. Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families. Provides psychological, emotional and informational support to patients and families. Communicates patients' needs to appropriate team members. Collaborates and communicates effectively and establishes good rapport with all levels of personnel. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in any field of study and completion of either a 2-year PA or NP Program required. License Nurse Practitioner License required., or Registration Physician Assistant License required., and Certificate 1 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required. 0-1 years related work experience required. Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for patients in both elective and emergent situations. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Prior experience in ICU setting.
