The Certified Orthoptist performs comprehensive diagnostic testing, including visual acuity and ocular motility assessments, and implements treatment programs like occlusion therapy and orthoptic exercises for adult and pediatric patients. They present findings to the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, while also instructing residents in strabismus techniques.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience, along with completion of an accredited Orthoptic Training Program. A minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience as a Certified Orthoptist is required for this role.
Performs a broad range of duties related to the delivery of care to adult and pediatric patients seen within the Department of Ophthalmology. Patient care includes visual acuity testing, ocular motility testing, patient medical history and instruction to patients and guardians. The Certified Orthoptist must determine testing methods most suitable for a particular patient. Data derived from these procedures are presented to the staffing Ophthalmologist/Optometrist to determine diagnosis and treatment plans for the patient and other duties as assigned.
