The Medical Oncology Social Worker assesses patient situations, sets goals, and obtains necessary services, providing psychosocial support to individuals, families, and groups coping with serious illnesses. Essential functions include interviewing clients, making referrals to community resources, providing education and counseling, and maintaining confidential case records.
Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree in Social Work and hold a current license for the state of Alabama, with a minimum of 2 years of social work experience preferred. Necessary abilities include working independently, maintaining organization, excellent communication skills, and the capacity to function in a high-stress environment while adhering to confidentiality laws.
Job Purpose The purpose of the Medical Oncology Social Worker is to help patients by assessing their situation, setting goals, and obtaining required services. The social worker will also provide individuals, families, and groups with the psychosocial support needed to cope with chronic, acute, or terminal illnesses. Services include advising family care givers, providing patient education and counseling, and making referrals for other services. Essential Job Functions Determine nature of client’s situation by interviewing client; assessing medical, psychological, emotional, and social information; making on-site visits. Establish a course of action by exploring options; setting goals with clients. Obtain assistance for client by referring him/her to community resources; arranging for appointments; establishing rapport with other agencies. Foster client’s action or adjustment by interpreting attitudes and patterns of behavior; explaining and pointing out new options. Maintain record of case by documenting client’s situation and client’s own actions. Monitor planned actions by periodic follow-up. Collaborate with other professionals to evaluate patients’ medical or physical condition and to assess client needs. Monitor, evaluate, and record client progress according to measurable goals described in treatment and care plan. Utilize consultation data and social work experience to plan and coordinate client or patient care and rehabilitation, following through to ensure service efficacy. Supervise or directs other workers providing services to clients or patients. Maintain client confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. Other duties as assigned. Must hold a current license for the state of Alabama. Minimum of 2 years social work experience preferred. Working conditions This position takes place largely in a clinical office environment. Occasional need to visit other locations, (hospitals, clinics, offices, etc.). Preference for an in-person candidate, but will consider hybrid position for qualified candidates. Physical requirements This position requires sitting for long periods of time. It also requires the employee to visit other locations. Direct reports This is not a supervisory position.
